Sergeant Calvin Amory of the Traffic department while speaking on radio Monday (11th June) indicted that DUIs are now becoming very popular with a number of drivers being convicted at the court.
He also made mention of the seriousness of the offence, not only in St. Kitts, but added that it is very important for them to continue educating the public on this matter.
Amory also stated that for the year so far, they have already had 9 convictions for persons who were caught drinking and driving.
The officer added that the nine convictions this year, are not customary, but cited the greater police presence and increased patrols for the greater success in detection.
He also revealed that nowadays whenever accidents are investigated they are checking to see if one is showing the necessary signs of drinking and once that is observed that individual will be required to do the DUI test and based on the result of the test they will press charges.
“We have now increased our detection rate and we are asking the general public, whenever persons are seen driving erratic, to inform the police, let us know and see if we can get control of the situation,” Amory said.
