Police nabs wanted man on the run for months, investigating vandalism at BHS

Hunkins went into hiding since his wanted poster was circulated around the country and in the media. Plain-clothes police officers spotted Hunkins on August 1, about 7:55 pm, walking on the Bay Road near Lower College Street. The officers arrested him and took him to Her Majesty’s Prison to serve a four-month sentence for larcency. Police indicate that Herbert is also a person of interest in a series of break-ins.

The Cayon Police Station that originated his arrest warrant thanked the public today for their assistance in calls concerning sightings of Hunkins.

The Police High COmmand expressed commendations to the arresting officers and said, “Certainly, the capture and subsequent delivery to Her Majesty’s Prison will bring some form of relief to the residents of Cayon and the surrounding villages, and also, the country as a whole.”

In other police news, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is investigating the breaking and entering, as well as vandalism of rooms at the Basseterre High School. The incident is believed to have occurred between July 31 and August 2, when a joiner, who works at the Woodwork Shop at the school, was on his way to the Woodwork Shop on Sunday, August 2.  According to the police report, the joiner observed an open door at the western office.

The building was checked by the joiner who found the office vandalized with the dry chemical from a multi-purpose fire extinguisher, as well as paint splatter on everything inside the office, including the photocopy machines, computers and student files.

Police checked the entire school buildings and found several classrooms and the Guidance Counseling Department to be opened, “with the stench of marijuana and rum bottles inside”. Investigations into this matter continues, and the CID asks persons who could assist with information to call 465-2241 ext. 220, 230, or 231, contact the nearest police station, or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477 (TIPS).

No personal information is required in calling Crime Stoppers, and individuals might be eligible to receive a reward.
