“Politics has made us an empty people”

Let me say at the outset that I hardly blame the politicians for this because the politicians will only continue to do things that the citizenry allow.  If we change our mindset then the politicians (because they simply pander to public interest) will also change.

We do not think for ourselves and worship the politicians

I watched the electoral campaign and how the politicians were able to decide public opinion instead of the other way around.  So Politician A can say that the Nevisian economy is in shambles and Politician B will disagree vehemently. If you support Politician A you believe him and vice versa for Politician B.  It was as if nobody cared to use Google or some news source to find out for themselves the state of the Nevisian economy and this is accepted.  Even with the present electoral case, people just listen to updates from their political parties and believe it without checking the source.  I am wondering how many people based on the issues in the case have searched online or asked any lawyer for any previous judgment in any election petition instead of just blindly believing they will win based on  what their political parties tell them.  It is obvious to me that most people will believe what their politician tells them before they believe what the Bible says.  It is not unthinkable that if certain people had the choice between going to heaven or seeing their party in power that they would choose the latter.  Even during the case one politician was on the court apron taking a call on his cell phone and no fewer than twenty people stood there staring from below as if he was speaking to them.  I am sure that whatever they heard (even if he was speaking to his plumber) that they felt “ok we are going to win this case”.

We simply decide not to like or associate with people simply because of politics.

It is sad when we as a society won’t even say “hello” to someone because of politics even when we do not know the person at all.  People would say “dat dey is a X supporter so me no got a ting to say to she”.  If they do the research that person is probably their family.  Yes the person may be a staunch supporter of an opposing party but all men are supposed to be brothers.  While we like to curse the crips and bloods for not getting along, politics has made us worse in Nevis.  The division in politics has crept into our community groups, our churches and into our schools.  I remember somebody was organizing a gospel concert that I was going to attend and somebody was asking me if the people are blue or green.  I was like “I couldn’t care less…the thought never entered my mind.  I am going to go praise my God.”  However the person would decide to attend or not based on if there were too many people of a certain colour planning it.  That is the kind of empty petty logic to which we have descended and it is the kind of abysmal depths we must raise from if we are going to preserve the beauty of our Nevis.

More time engrossed in politics than anything else

It is important in any democracy and even for one’s general knowledge for one to listen to both political parties and make an informed decision.  I myself have also followed the elections in the region and the USA over the years as well.  However it is important for one to be able to compartmentalize our politics and not make it the main thing in our lives.  Whatever happened to God, family, our economic and physical well being, church and community involvement or sports?  Some people sit and listen Let’s Talk, On the Mark and Tell Me every single week (a combined total of 6 hours) but they have no time for anything else.  I wonder if these people would be willing to give two hours a week to bond with their child or their spouse or to pray for the crime in our country or to attend church or to lend a hand to some community initiative.  Not even the hosts have the time to make it every single week but very many Nevisians tune in every single week to listen each and every show.  I remember this one guy commenting that he listens each minute of every show each week plus Breakfast menu because he don’t want to miss a thing.  I am hopeful that this same guy and people like him do not miss the fact that his daughter has a hickey on her neck or that his son has merchandise in his house bought with drugs money.  There is no issue with politics being a part of our lives but not the main thing.

It is God who made us and it is he we should be worshipping; not a politician.  The same God was also so gracious to give us a functioning brain to think and make decisions for ourselves instead of following a politician blindly.  Our politics has caused us to hate people we don’t even know and to stop speaking to people we once had great relationships with. Our politics has made us jettison the pursuit of God and our family life.  Instead of becoming part of the solution for our social problems, we sit at home listening the talk shows and discussing politics on facebook, websites and on the phone.  Let us resolve to be better in 2012 where we act like we truly belong to the Queen of the Caribbees.
