The candidate, who spoke about youth development during a public meeting in Cayon, said that the Ministry of Education, along with the Government, “cared less about students learning in a healthy environment”.
He accused the Denzil Douglas led administration, particularly Minister of Education Nigel Carty, Minister of Health Marcella Liburd and Minister of Public Works Earl Asim Martin of “not caring about your children.”
“That is why we are saying, that Team Unity is here to save the day. Team Unity is here to make things better for your children in this country,” Powell stated.
Powell also indicated that there are local students going abroad to study, who are opting not to return to the Federation because of high student loans.
“They don’t want to come back, because when they come back, they have student loans to pay back. They come back, and they can’t get jobs. Imagine, me and a young lady were talking, she came back with a masters… and she had to get a job on PEP,” Powell said.
He added that the young lady, with her Master’s Degree, was offered a minimum wage salary while on the program. Powell further noted that the student loan issue is just one of the issues young people face in St. Kitts and Nevis.
“I am saying that Team Unity will make things better. We are going to create a system though the Development Bank, and other institutions, whereby student loans have to be reduced,” Powell announced.
