Powell raises concerns over electoral office breaches of the law

Powell explained that one of the registration officers was seen in the public’s domain wearing a “SKNY” T-shirt, which, according to him, reflects “corruption” in that office.

“Today (Saturday 7th) when I passed the electoral office, who you think standing up outside in their SKNY red shirt, the same chubby,” adding, “You understand the corruption that is in the electoral system. You understand registration officers who are expected to be impartial, are wearing their SKNY red shirts,” Powell remarked.

He explained, too, that recently he went into the electoral office to enquire about the electoral list for his constituency, East Basseterre, and he was informed by the manager of the Electoral Office, Oliver Knight, that the voters list for that district was unavailable.

However, Powell indicated that he informed the electoral office, that the list should have been made available by the end of January, only be directed to the Supervisor of Elections.

“I said that the law states that the list must be available by the 31st January. He said it ain’t available. I said that you really want to continue to break the law; he said to go and ask the supervisor. So I called Wingrove George on the phone and I said, ‘Mr. Supervisor I would like the electoral list for constituency #2.’ They tell me the Court said that they couldn’t release it. I said the Court talked about boundary. It ain’t talk about no list… he said, it ain’t available,” Powell outlined.

Further, the young lawyer reiterated that he quoted the law to the supervisor of elections, which states that the list must be available, only to be informed again by the George that the list was not readily available.

“I want you all to tell Wingrove George that me, Jonel Powell, say that as far as I am concerned, in my opinion, he is a criminal and breaking the law, and he will have to answer to the law under a government of national unity,” Powell disclosed.

He noted that persons who are registered illegally by the supervisor of elections would also have to answer to the law.

To this end, Powell posited that he, George, cannot stop the people of constituency#8 and those from Stapleton from reelecting the incumbent representative, Eugene Hamilton, for another term in the House on Elections Day.
