Powell wants to enhance performing arts teaching in schools

Basseterre, Monday, 1st November, 2021, (MyVue News.com)-The Minister of Education in St. Kitts & Nevis, Jonel Powell, has expressed his desire to see a greater concentration on the teaching of performing arts, as part of the formal school curriculum.

His comments come as the country is embarking on initiatives to map out a new course for the development of the local entertainment industry.

He opined that “Within the primary and secondary schools, I think that there is a need to ramp up the existence of performing arts within our schools…It’s not just a matter of getting a dance teacher and teaching children dancing, but to integrate it into the curriculum, which is part of our continuous curriculum development.”

Powell, who is also the Minister of Culture, made his comments at a recent Creative Forum for stakeholders involved in the entertainment industry.

Powell, however, sees the way forward as a collaborative approach, with the newly established Ministry of Entertainment and the Ministry of Education.

“The two ministries can partner, in terms of providing the technical support behind the creative industry,” stated Powell.

He said the schools can be used as a forum to start educating persons who are desirous of learning how to sing and others who wish to enhance their talents on the technical side.

He said that when the effort begins at the early stages of the school system, students would be in a better position to branch out into various entrepreneurial fields of the music industry and become professionals in the creative industry.
