Prison official wants charges laid against female colleague

The official said the female prison officer tried to prevent the police from leaving with the male prison officer around 2 pm yesterday afternoon.

“The police had to fire a shot at her because she refused to open the gate. They used rubber bullets so nobody got hurt, but it is a shame that this is what (police) had to resort to get their work done. They should have taken her away, too,” the source said.

OBSERVER media understands a single shot was fired into the ground and it ricocheted into the prison gate.

The female officer stepped aside, and thereafter, a number of the male officer’s colleagues threatened to down tools if he was arrested.

The police then decided to let the male prison officer go and he agreed he would go to the police station this morning.

When OBSERVER media visited the prison yesterday afternoon, all appeared normal on the outside.

Minister of National Security Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin said he will continue to work towards turning around what he calls a “lax situation” inside the prison.

“It is very clear that order and discipline are at the very lowest at the prison at this time and we are going to make sure we deal with the matter firmly to fully demonstrate that this is an institution where discipline and order must be maintained at all times,” Benjamin told OBSERVER media.

The minister confirmed there are a number of other matters under investigation to include a female prison officer allegedly smuggling cellular phone to female inmates.

Benjamin is scheduled to visit the prison this morning. He said he and prison officials met late yesterday to discuss the way forward with regards to the security of the jail.
