Onesha Elvin said her daughter Alliana Spencer was diagnosed with avascular necrosis on December 6 after she complained of severe pain in the hip a few days earlier.
Since receiving the news, the family organised a fund-raiser cruise called “All Aboard” on the Coral Ark. The event is scheduled for 8 o’clock tonight and tickets cost $40 – payable when one goes to the event. Tian Winter is among the performers while DJ Woodenfoot and Sir Lance will provide music, the invite states.
Elvin said her daughter’s bone disease is treatable because it is in the very early stage.
Avascular necrosis is the death of bone tissue due to a lack of blood supply. Also called osteonecrosis, avascular necrosis can lead to tiny breaks in the bone and the bone’s eventual collapse.
In early December, Spencer began experiencing hip pains and that’s when her diagnosis came. The mother said she was advised to immediately get the child to stay off her feet to ease pressure on the hip.
Within a day or so, the child was in a wheelchair and her conditioned worsened to the point that one night she could not breathe and Emergency Medical Services had to give her oxygen.
This week was “better” for young Spencer, her mother said. She indicated the pain has been less intense and the child has been able to walk a bit. She was slated to have surgery here on Tuesday, but Elvin said she wants a second opinion so she is taking the child to the US, where she’s a citizen, and have her evaluated by a bone specialist.
“If anyone wants to donate to this cause, they can do so at ACB (Antigua Commercial Bank) in the account for Onesha Elvin. The number of the account is 106464755,” the mother said.
