Public Defender Probes Woman’s Humiliating Airport Search

Newland-Martin said she was left distraught after she was taken to a room and asked to remove her specially-designed prosthetic legs.

She said she was unable to properly reattach the legs as the special device used to do so was already in her checked luggage.

She said this made moving around difficult during the 21-hour flight.

Public Defender Earl Witter says his Office has taken note of the situation and believes that a thorough investigation is needed into the matter.

Noting that his office has already collected several statements, Witter says the probe will be seeking to unearth if any of Newland-Martin’s fundamental rights were breached and to make the necessary recommendation.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister, Dr. Omar Davies, has condemned the treatment meted out to Mrs. Newland Martin and has ordered a probe.

And the Airport Authority of Jamaica has said it will be reviewing its security arrangements for dealing with disabled persons.
