Held at Sugar Mill (Warner Park Stadium), the proceedings began shortly after 8:00 p.m. with a ceremony to officially kick-off the festivities and then it was down to business with the contenders for the Best of the Rest competition.
The competitors in order of performance were: Provoker who sang “Plant a Post”, King La La with his popular tune “Puppy ah tun dog”, the “Mash up d Party” singer-Aba Lively, newcomer Lord Felix who sang “Never gonna Drink Again”, the unpredictable Unexpected who performed “Rock and Dirt”, the popular Hot Rod who sang his “Pork for Dinner ” song and the “Run Willie Run” singer, Little Willie.
De Neglector was to have performed during this competition but was a “no show”.
Each performer drew some measure of reaction from the crowd which grew larger as the minutes rolled by. Obvious crowd favourites, however, included La La who, in order to make his point, incorporated live animals in his act and Hot Rod who had as one of his main props, a slab of prepared pork.
While most included props in their routine, others relied solely on their whit, talent and stage presence to capture a spot among the top three.
Fierce and ready for battle, 10 female kaisonians put their best foot forward as each sought to prepare their heads for the crown which could only be awarded to one.
Sha Angel received the golden opportunity to make the first impression and that she did with her rendition “Women Stand Up”, “Heaven Knows” singer, Singing Angie appeared next followed by Queen Jackie with “Message From the Drum”, Singing Jennifer with “Before a Next One Die”, Dolly who performed “Don’t be No Gangster Slave”, the “Social Networking” singer-Queen Kibie and Queen Anastasia who performed “Anastasia for PM”.
Singing Pearline’s “Ital Vital Music”, “Lady Sunshine’s “Sperm Donor” and Miss Independent’s “Winning with One” also formed part of the competition.
Addressing issues of social ills and responsible leadership, the ladies provided much food for thought in addition to their captivating performances.
At the end of the night, the judges had the difficult task of selecting the winners of both competitions. Their deliberations, however, did not phase the audience which enjoyed the soulful and melodious voice of Trinidadian calypsonian, Singing Sandra. The veteran Kaisonian performed, among others, two of her popular tunes, “Crying” and “Dignity”.
While Queen Anastasia took the crown, the judges informed that the 1st runner-up position went to Singing Jackie and interestingly, the 2nd and 3rd runner-up positions were captured by sisters Queen Kibie and Miss Independent respectively.
With King La La capturing the crown, the 1st and 2nd runner-up spots went to Hot Rod and Lord Felix.
