Rabbit and Breadfruit to Highlight Eat Local Day

The food fair is schedule to begin at 11:00 a.m. and will showcase locally grown and prepared foods as part of the Department’s attempt to escalate the use of home-grown produce by citizens of the Federation.

Marketing Officer of the Agriculture Department, Al Edwards told Miyvue.com that one of the objectives of the event is to introduce home grown and prepared foods to consumers in St. Kitts and Nevis in order to familiarize them with it, so they will demand it and expand the local market in St. Kitts.

He also said that the department gets a number of complaints stating that children dislike traditional produce such as breadfruit, yam and tanya and they felt that they should bring them back in a more attractive form.

A new feature for this year’s Eat Local Day will be the Best Local Dish competition where homeowners will be invited to make their own local dishes at home and compete against other homemade dishes to win prizes varying from hotel stays, dinners and appliances.al-edwards

He added that the main focus of the event will be on rabbits; and rabbit meat will be available in all forms and menus.

Edwards further stated that with the department’s goal of food security, rabbit an animal that is easily reared and is a good source of protein, is one of the products they are pushing.

The Marketing officer also indicated that the department will stress once again on the breadfruit as it is one of the most versatile foods on the island and it is very cheap.

This eat local day celebration will be the 3rd edition, with 2 others being held in 2011.
