Due to the heavy water flows in the area, a portion of the road on Tuesday, 31stJuly, 2012, was undermined and eventually collapsed, following the heavy rains from Monday, and continuing the following day.
Before the flooded conditions developed however, crews from the PWD were already carrying out some remedial work, trying to expand sections of the street where the waste water is allowed to travel down to the sea.
Matters therefore became worse once the heavy rains commenced at the start of the week and continued almost unabated for the next 48 hours. Eventually the road had to be closed by police authorities, because of the danger it posed to both motorists and pedestrians.
With the tropical wave now past the islands, the showers have disappeared for the moment, and PWD is now doubling their efforts to undertake the required repair work to restore some normalcy, especially to accommodate the regular public bus traffic which has had to be diverted to nearby roads.
Though precise estimates have not been provided, it is very likely that the work will continue way past the upcoming long holiday Emancipation Day weekend.
Meantime, the Eastern Caribbean Forecast is showing that the tropical wave now crossing the Eastern Caribbean was located over Hispaniola this morning, as it continues to move westward.
Cloudy skies with scattered showers will continue over Hispaniola and Puerto Rico today. Isolated thunderstorms are likely to develop over Hispaniola and western Puerto Rico as a result of the unstable conditions generated by the tropical wave.

Skies will become a bit more cloudy and showery over Barbados tonight. Skies over Trinidad will be partly cloudy with scattered showers and a chance of afternoon thunderstorms. It will be mostly cloudy tonight due to the effects of the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone.
For St. Kitts and Nevis, skies will be partly cloudy with scattered showers today and fair tonight.
