American stand-up comedian Bill Maher handed Rihanna, real name Robyn Rihanna Fenty the special honour, saying that the Barbadian singer is “the voice of our time”.
Her mother also took to the stage saying: “You’re so strong. So positive.
“So humble. So focused. It’s amazing… I’m so blessed to be a part of this historic moment.”
The Pour it Up singer was the first-ever recipient of the prize at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles last night and after she performed Diamonds, there was another supportive message from her mentor Jay Z.
When she took to the podium to accept the honour, Rihanna said: “I’m terrible at giving speeches.
“To my fans – I love you so much. You keep me driven. Right now, at 25 years old, I can’t believe that I am holding an Icon Award… I’m grateful!”
The singer also received the Favourite Female Artist – Soul/R&B award.
