Rowley hopes Dana case near closure

Persad-Bissessar told media gathered at the Government’s new National Enrichment Centre in Carlsen Field, Chaguanas, that her administration had no part in Bakr being held for questioning in the May 2014 murder of senior counsel Dana Seetahal.

“Those matters are in the hands of law enforcement and the police, so I have no comment on that, except to let the police do their work,” Persad-Bissessar said.

She also stated, “We have no interference in any way with that matter.”

PNM political leader Dr Keith Rowley however last night said he hopes the police investigation of Abu Bakr is “in fact serious, honest police work”.

Rowley said if it is not then this country would have entered “another very dangerous and unacceptable state of affairs”.

Rowley made the statements at the PNM’s political meeting held at Princess Royal Park in Arima where the party presented its candidates for 12 Eastern constituencies in Trinidad.

The 12 PNM potential candidates presented last night were: Hafeez Ali for Barataria/San Juan, Ancil Antoine – D’Abadie/O’Meara, Alisha Romano – St Augustine, Glenda Jennings-Smith – Toco/Sangre Grande, Cherrie-Ann Crichlow-Cockburn – Lopinot/Bon Air West, Bharath Barry Lochan – Cumuto/Manzanilla, Clarence Rambharat – Mayaro, Anthony Garcia – Arima, Esmond Forde – Tunapuna, Terrence Deyalsingh – St Joseph, Maxie Cuffie – La Horquetta/ Talparo and Camille Robinson-Regis for Arouca/Maloney.

“I take no issue with the police doing their job, but I am still a citizen observing.

“I hope that the police could add to the detection level that is so low with respect to criminal conduct in Trinidad and Tobago so I hope at the end of the enquiry and the questioning of Bakr that it is in fact serious, honest police work and we are very near to the closing the case of Dana Seetahal because if it is not, if it is not we would have entered another very dangerous and unacceptable state of affairs in Trinidad and Tobago,” Rowley said.
