In a recent interview with MiyVue.com Mr. Liburd highlighted these issues, to include the lack of adequate funding and the need to boost membership within the crucial political district.
Liburd admitted that the major challenge that will be met head on is fundraising, given that funds are drying up all over. He said that given the heavy financial burden of meeting the costs for various constituency events and activities, it is going to be important for his team to begin an early process of generating income.
He explained that the annual Christmas party is one such event that demands large funds to secure the many gifts and supplies that are provided to the children of Central Basseterre.
“We also try to help our constituents with whatever problems they may have; so we also make donations to those in need,” stated Mr. Liburd.
The PAM Central Basseterre chairman indicated however that his group is going to embark upon certain creative ways in which they hope to raise funds and they have already set a target which they feel will be workable for the rest of the year. He said this target will be revised for the full year of 2012.
In order to win the next election, Liburd feels they need to take urgent steps to mobilize now because the constituents are saying they need their candidate in place so that this could help to motivate them.
He said once they get their candidate, and he or she is up and working, they believe they can win the next poll in the constituency. “We are trying to increase our members who attend our constituency meetings and that would help us to recruit even more members, recognizing that elections are a numbers game and each one would be able to reach another.”
Once we get our numbers and we solidify them, then we believe that our challenges would be better managed.
Liburd said he wants his Constituency members to be focused on their goal (of winning the next election). He said though they have been cheated in the past, this time around, (the upcoming poll in 2015), the party is embarking on plans to ensure a fair poll is held.
Mr. Liburd was elected as the new Chairperson of the group on Monday 8th August, 2011 along with Stella Taylor as Deputy Chairperson, Gloria Byron, Secretary, Hilton Clarke, Treasurer, Loretta Nisbett, Assistant Secretary/Treasurer and Executive Member Latoya Bussue.
