According to an official release from the Police Department, at around 8:45 PM on Saturday, police in the Sandy Point area responded to a report of robbery that had occurred at the Dollar Stretcher Supermarket, located on the main road of the town.
Police enquiries revealed that shortly before closing time a number of patrons were shopping for their weekly groceries in the supermarket when two (2) masked men armed with guns and wearing bulletproof vests, entered the business place and shot and robbed a patron identified to be passenger bus driver Vincent “Saga” Jarvis of The Alley, Sandy Point and the cashiers of an undisclosed sum of money.
Jarvis was transported to the JNF Hospital by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) where he received emergency medical treatment for the gunshot injuries to his face and has been hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
Police officers who were in the area doing a routine patrol were also alerted and arrived on the scene when the robbery was still in progress.
As soon as the robbers exited the supermarket the police opened fire on them but they managed to escape in bulletproof vests.
During the incident an officer received a gunshot injury to his instep which was caused by friendly fire.
The officer was transported to the JNF Hospital where he received treatment for his injuries and has also been hospitalized in stable condition.
The scene was processed by officers from the Crime Scene Department and number items of evidential value were collected and taken into police custody for further analysis.
The owner and proprietor of the supermarket, Mr. St. Clair Warner of Sandy Point, and his staff, appear to have escaped physical injuries.
There are no suspects at this time however investigations are ongoing.
