SKELEC Still Confronted by Power Outages

In a release issued Tuesday afternoon, SKELEC spoke to the island-wide loss of power that occurred on Thursday 26th July, at approximately 11:00am.

It indicated that that problem was due to a mechanical failure at one of the generators which led to instability of other units, causing the protection systems to protect the power plant by shutting down other systems.

Power began being restored at about 11:20am with most feeders back online by 12:30pm. However, the Industrial Site feeder was not placed back online until 5:50pm.

Then on Saturday 28th July, at 9:45am partial mechanical failure caused a Stage 1 and 2 electricity interruption affecting feeders Bayfords, Cayon, Sandy Point, Industrial Site and Canada. Power was restored at 10:09am although a trip of one of the generators caused another island-wide outage at 5:00pm. Power to the entire island was restored at 5:59pm.

SKELEC officials said they wish to apologize to all consumers for the inconvenience that the interruptions have caused. They said they are continuing to work on improving electricity reliability on the island. “We are still analyzing data to the full cause of the past weeks’ failures so as to further improve our service. SKELC thanks the public for their understanding,” said the SKELEC release.
