This is now the eighth title for the band, which first captured Road March in 1988, with a song titled, “Big League”. On this occasion however, the winning selection for the band was the very popular “DCH”, (Drop Cover, Hold On), with 36 points.
The last time the Small Axe won the title was in 2007 with Boom Bam Bam.
Taking the second runner up position was the young and energetic group known as the Kollision Band, with 34 points.
There was no room this year for the Grand Masters Band which in the past four years won three titles, (2011, 2009 and 2008).
Also left again in the wilderness was the Sugar Band which has not secured a Road March title since 2005.
The decision announced today, Wednesday 2nd January, has again sparked controversy about the criteria being used to judge the Road March title, though it is basically the very same method that has been used for the past 41 years of carnival, when all of the so called big bands have, at different periods, won the Road March title.
But it will be very difficult this year to truthfully argue against the very popular choice of the Small Axe Band with a song that has been praised by people of all walks of life.
The main prize for Road March this year is EC$10,000.00.
