MiyVue.com understands that Lance Corporals Charles Bowry of Sandy Point and Jamal Phillip of Ponds Extension were, on the afternoon of Thursday, 24th February, 2011, charged with “rape”. This was confirmed by Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibility for Crime (ACP Crime) Ian Queeley.
The alleged incident which led to the arrest of the two officers, took place sometime after 12:00 a.m. on Saturday, 19th February, 2011.
Information reaching MiyVue.com suggests that a 16-year-old female was forced in a vehicle in which two Defence Force soldiers reportedly travelled after which she was transported to the Fort Thomas Hotel and raped. She was reportedly abandoned somewhere on the outskirts of Basseterre.
This media house understands that the men, having been charged with the felony, were detained in police custody and it is likely that they will make application for bail and should the court find favour with their application, their bail would be granted. If not however, they would be detained at Her Majesty’s Prison pending their trial date.
In a previous interview with MiyVue.com, Public Relations Officer for the St. Kitts Nevis Defence Force, Captain Kayode Sutton, indicated that the allegations are “not compatible with our moral principles of this organisation that we serve so we just remain in full cooperation with the police and we will see what their investigations reveal.”
He had also indicated that any action which would be taken by the Defence Force with respect to the then accused, would be determined by the police’s investigations. MiyVue.com made contact with Captain Sutton to ascertain what action would be taken now that the officers have been charged, and he indicated that he has not yet had any official word about them being charged.
“…When we would have gotten the official word that they have been charged with rape, then the force is going to take its action.”
Investigations into the matter are on-going.
