Sports minister commends athletes

Basseterre, St. Kitts, 16th March, 2018 ( – Amidst the upcoming excitement of the scholastic meets at the Kim Collins Athletics Stadium, Minister of Sports Shawn Richards encourages students to apply themselves academically while striving to be excellent athletes.

Speaking at a recent press conference of the St. Kitts-Nevis Amateur Athletics Association (SKNAAA), Minister Richards said the bond between sports and academics is necessary and must be maintained in a balanced way.

He said, “We have seen several of our athletes go and become successful student athletes at the collegiate level.”

Richards commended the dedication of students, coaches, teachers, parents and the schools in preparing for the scholastic meets that start on 17th March, at the Kim Collins Athletics Stadium.

He commented, “Since last year, there have been student athletes applying themselves to the training regimens needed to get them to these championships.  I am proud to say that the commitment of our athletes is second to none.  These individuals undertake the sport with the same level of focus and seriousness as any other, anywhere in the world.”

Richards said also, “We have athletes that dedicate anywhere from 10 to 15 hours to the sport and I encourage everyone to come out and support the effort as you are already a winner when you step on the track at these championships.”
