St. Kitts and Nevis under tropical storm watch…Erika on its way

This time, the threat is Erika.

As of 7:00 Tuesday morning Erika was said to be located 750 miles east of the Leeward Islands. It is moving at approximately 20mph.

As a consequence, tropical storm watches have been issued for St. Kitts and Nevis and other territories in the Leewards, including St. Maarten, Montserrat, Antigua & Barbuda, Saba, Anguilla, Statia and Saba. A watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within 48 hours.

Reports predict that the centre of Erika may reach these islands on Wednesday night or early Thursday.

The Miami based National Hurricane “…the storm’s maximum sustained winds were near 45 mph with higher gusts. Some strengthening is expected in the next few days. The forecast calls for Erika to reach the Bahamas Saturday as a hurricane.”

Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 80 miles from the center.
