St. Kitts Hosting OECS Sensitization Workshop

OECS Commissioner Astona Browne, who addressed the opening ceremony Monday morning, explained that the “sensitization workshop” has been organized to create awareness amongst a wide cross section of the local community. 
 
OECS Director General, Dr. Len Ishmael; St. Lucia’s OECS Commissioner, Dr. June Soomer and; St. Kitts and Nevis’ Attorney General, Patrice Nisbett were also scheduled to be amongst the main presenters at Monday’s public awareness exercise, at the St. Kitts Marriott Ballroom. 
 
According to Commissioner Browne, the sensitization event will be a full day activity comprising of three sessions. 
 
The first session will address the purpose, objectives, policies, and strategies associated with the Revised Treaty of Basseterre, which was signed on 18th June, 2010.  
 
The second session will be split into four parts addressing: 1) free movement of people and the facilitation of travel and security; 2) the governance structure of the OECS; 3) the OECS Assembly and; 4) legislative action taken by St. Kitts and Nevis in fulfilment of the Revised Treaty of Basseterre.  
 
The third and final session will include some insight as to the operational functionality of the Union by the Director General as well as a question and answer session. 
 
Commissioner Browne also said that the Director General Ishmael will pay a courtesy call on the President of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce during her visit to the Federation. 
 
The sensitization workshop follows the historic inauguration of the OECS Assembly, which took place on Friday in St. John’s, Antigua. During that sitting, Mr. Walford Gumbs, of St. Kitts and Nevis was elected as the Deputy Speaker of the OECS Assembly.
