St. Kitts Launches 5th Annual “Plastic Free July” Campaign to promote sustainable consumption habits

Citizens are invited to be a part of the solution to plastic pollution by participating in the month of events.

To combat plastic pollution and promote a healthy environment, the St. Kitts Sustainable
Destination Council (SDC), in collaboration with its partner organizations, is pleased to announce
its participation in Plastic Free July 2021. This month-long campaign takes place annually to raise
awareness around the plastic-problem and engages local stakeholders in reducing their reliance
on single-use plastics. St. Kitts residents and businesses are encouraged to participate in the
exciting, month-long agenda of action-oriented events and activities, meant to inspire mental and
behavioural change.

The SDC acknowledges the challenging context within which we find ourselves due to
the onslaught of a community spread of Covid-19. As we work together to address the
immediate threat Covid-19 poses to our health, we must continue to consider the
trajectory of our long-term wellbeing. Our actions today play a significant role in ensuring
a sustainable future for our island-home and the generations to come–a future in which
single-use plastics are not a threat to the health of our communities and viability of our

The Plastic Free July campaign is part of the SDC’s broader “Plastics-Be-Gone” initiative which
seeks to reduce the amount of single-use plastics consumed in St. Kitts by at least 30% over thenext five years. Since its founding in 2013, the St. Kitts SDC has been relentlessly facilitating
cross-sector collaboration around destination stewardship and pursuing leading practices in
sustainable development. With the holistic wellbeing of St. Kitts as its ultimate goal, the SDC is in
the process of enacting a five-year plan focused on the areas of Community Involvement and
Benefits, Culture and Natural Heritage, and Environment and Destination Management. Realizing
the threat that plastic pollution poses to the future of St. Kitts’ ecosystems, communities, and
destination appeal, the “Plastics-Be-Gone” initiative was identified as one of the
destination-stewardship projects that the SDC will implement to achieve this vision.

Although the SDC and its partner organizations champion the “Plastics-Be-Gone” initiative
year-round, committing to participating in Plastic Free July presents the distinct opportunity to
fully express the magnitude of the SDC’s dedication to mitigating the harmful effects of single-use
plastics…and have a bit of fun while doing so.

This year, the SDC will be facilitating the following activities and events during Plastic Free July:

July 1: Unveiling of Plastic Free July Billboard

July 5-9: Be the Change Week
○ A week all about how individuals can make a difference–make sure to tune in on
social media to contend during a week of fun, plastic-free challenges.

July 12: Relaunch of Spotted Campaign
○ Spy someone using a reusable straw instead of a plastic one? Notice a favorite
restaurant using compostable to-go containers instead of styrofoam? After
spotting it, share it on social media and tag the SDC to be featured.

July 29: Panel Discussion

about “Single Use Plastics: Low Cost, High Price”.
