Tuesday, 31st January, 2023, (MyVue News. com)-A new Governor General will be sworn into office in St. Kitss & Nevis, in a ceremony that begins at 11:50 tonight, (Tuesday, 31st January, 2023), according to information emanating from the Federal Government.

This new appointment will make the fourth Governor-General the country has had in approximately eight years.

The appointment of Marcella Liburd will also be historic, as she becomes the first female to hold the highest office in the land since the attainment of political independence in 1983.

Liburd will officially assume office at approximately 12:01 am, Wednesday, 1st February, following the official ceremony scheduled for Government House, Springfield, Basseterre.

Liburd previously served her country as a teacher, Deputy Speaker, and then Speaker, Senator, and Member of Parliament.

Top government officials and colleagues in the St. Kitts & Nevis Labour Party, an organization she once served as Chairman, as well as family members and friends, are expected to be present for the inauguration.

The new Governor General is also a former netball star and was a member of St. Kitts & Nevis netball team that won the Caribbean championship in 1973.

She was also sister to former Minister of Education, Clarence Fitzroy Bryant, (deceased), who served in parliament in the 1970s.

The new Governor General will be replacing Sir Tapley Seaton, who held the post from 2015 to January, 2023. Immediately before Seaton, were Sir Edmund Lawrence and Dr. Sir Cuthberth Sebastian.

It is not clear though, if the outgoing Governor-General, who was appointed by the former coalition Government of Team Unity, (PAM/CCM, PLP), resigned, retired, or was asked to resign. However, following the August 5th, 2022, election and the victory of the Labour Party, the replacement of Seaton was anticipated by nationals.

The first Governor General for the country was the late Sir Clement Arrindell, who was succeeded by Sebastian.
