The St. Kitts-Nevis National Basketball left the federation today, Thursday November 8th for Dominica to participate in the 2nd Annual Sugar Creole Basketball Festival.
The weekend festival was first organised last year by members of the Dominica Amateur Basketball Association and the St. Kitts Amateur Basketball Association and was hosted in St. Kitts.
This year’s festival will feature national teams from Dominica, Martinique and St. Kitts-Nevis.
According to Wallis Wilkin a member of the St. Kitts Association and Sugar Creole Festival organizing committee the festival is expected to grow significantly in 2013.
“The festival is expected to be expanded in 2013 and hosted in St. Kitts, said SKABA Executive member Wallis Wilkin.
“We have already made some initial contacts with some other associations in the sub region to invite them to participate in the 2013 edition of the festival. We are hoping that next year’s festival will feature the national teams of Antigua, Anguilla, Monsterrat, St.Maarten and the BVI all of whom will be invited to participate along with Dominica and Martinique. This will be a much welcomed addition to the OECS Sports Calendar as many islands have been yearning for a sub-regional tournament to fill the void left many years ago by the dormancy of the OECS and LIBA Basketball tournaments,” WilKin continued
The St. Kitts team is expected to return on Monday. It is the intention of the SKABA Executive, SKABA President and Team Manager Romel Tobias to keep the team engaged even after the tournament to ensure an active national team. The St. Kitts-Nevis National Basketball team last played in 2006 in the CBC tournament held in Jamaica.
