In the end however, and in the very last over, it was India who eventually emerged as the winner of the match, reaching the target of 116 for victory, after losing only 4 wickets. Thanks to solid knocks of 36 by Harmanpreet Kaur; 37 from Mithali Raj; and 24 from Amita Sharma, India managed to complete a much needed victory, in the twentieth over, reaching a total of 117, thus winning by six wickets, and with one ball to spare.
India won the toss earlier in the day, and took the gamble to put West Indies into bat. The home team struggled in the early overs, losing the first wicket, that of Stephanie Taylor, with the score on 17. Five runs after; Deandra Dottin fell, creating some turmoil in the Windies batting. In the end however, West Indies managed to build a final total of 115 for 4, which at one point in the Indian’s batting, seemed too much of a chase.
Mithali Raj of India was declared Player of the Match, for her contribution of 37 not out and her role in steering her team to victory.
However, Stephanie Taylor of the West Indies was announced as the Player of the T20 Series.
The One Day International Series is set to begin on Wednesday, 29th February, at 10:00am, at Warner Park. Matches will also be played on Friday and Sunday, also from 10:00am. There is no admission fee.
