Still a Difficult Off Season for Cruise Business but Officials Hopeful

This summer, only 2 ships, the Serenade of the Seas and the Carnival Victory are visiting St. Kitts.

Both ships are expected to make a total of 31 calls during the summer off- season, but are scheduled to deliver an estimated 88,000 passengers to the island.

On Friday, 12th August, 2011, the Carnival Victory, with a capacity of 3,050 passengers was scheduled to arrive in Basseterre, remaining until late afternoon, providing some relief and opportunities for the local merchants in the area.

According to some store owners, in downtown Basseterre, the off season has been extremely difficult for them, with very low sales, especially on days when ships are not visiting the island.

Earlier in the week, (on Monday 8th August), the Royal Caribbean with its ship the Serenade visited St. Kitts, at Port Zante, with some 2,456 passengers and a crew of 865.

Scores of these visitors were able to provide business for the taxis, tour companies, beach activity operators, stores and other tourism related businesses on the island.

The cruise sector is not expected to return to its usual busy activity until October.
