Students win TDC’s education scholarship awards to pursue undergraduate studies

Out of 33 submitted scholarship applications, Charles Bussue and Joyce Moven of Nevis, and Andre Tyrell and Akheam Fox of St. Kitts were the successful candidates for the scholarships. These new winners join the previous list of 27 MLK Scholarship holders since 2008. Each will receive US$5000 as a contribution to their studies.

Earle Kelly, the chairman of the TDC Group of Companies, told the scholarship recipients, “We are now partnering with you, as you embark on this new leg of your educational journey. We are doing this because you have shown promise… As you go off to start or resume your studies, remember you have a responsibility to be a guiding light to others and a good example to your peers.”

In encouraging recipients to return, Kelly opined that as a Small Island Developing State, we need all the brainpower that we can harness, as he urged them to come back and contribute to the development of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Kelly said the scholarship program was named after the second chairman of the company, Michael L. King, who had a passion for education. Kelly said, “King always was interested in people getting higher education. I suspect he still does, even though he hasn’t been with the company over the last fifteen years.” King had a key role in setting up the Warren Tyson Memorial Scholarship Program for high school students in 1981, which has assisted over 350 students from all the high schools in the federation.

Chairman of the MLK Scholarship Committee Dr. Clive Ottley outlined several criteria and conditions required to be an applicant. He said all applicants must be citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis, and normally resident in the federation. They must have had admission to a university for a full-time course or should be full-time students already registered.

Dr. Ottley disclosed, “In the past, we have invited applications from undergraduates as well as post graduate students. But we have noticed that in every case over the past eight years, there have always been undergraduate students who seem to be more qualified and deserving of the grant than the post graduate students. We have agreed that going forward, the award will only be open to undergraduate students.”

One important note is that the scholarships are not provided for studies in law or in medicine. Typical approved fields include architecture, accounting, business management, construction management, economics, engineering, information technology and pharmacology.

“This year we had nineteen applications from St. Kitts and ten applications from Nevis…We urge people who are applying to bring their applications in early,” said Dr. Ottley, as he indicated receipt of several late applications that could not be considered for the four awards of US$5,000 each.

Kelly indicated that many of the former Michael King Scholarship holders are making their mark in professional and management positions, at various institutions within the federation. He said that King believed that education goes a long way in assisting in the development of the population and the country as a whole.

While TDC is about making money, Kelly said the corporation “believes in giving back to the communities that we serve helping them to grow and be stronger”.

“That is why we contribute to so many caused, including Rotary, churches, schools and various community and sporting clubs throughout the federation,” said Kelly, who said TDC also assists its employees in tertiary and university level education, plus national events such as Carnival, Music Festival, Black Sand and Green Valley Festivals, Inter-High School Track and Field Championships, Inter-Primary School Athletics, Pink Lilly Foundation and Culturama.

The scholarship total amounts to US$20,000 this year, which has been the case for the past seven years.
