As the students prepare to enter the workforce, they participated in a highly interactive session held on Monday 25th February 2013, which was facilitated by Mrs. Shakia Mars, TDC Human Resources Administrator, who spoke on the topic ‘Preparing for the World of Work’.
Mrs. Mars spoke candidly and addressed the following subject areas:
- How to dress for work
- Expectations of the Workplace
- Effective Communication
- Company Policies (including the proper use of Company resources)
- Benefits of gaining work experience
Mrs. Mars challenged the group to make the best use of the information presented to them, in order to better prepare for the world of work and their upcoming job attachment during the month of March. They were advised not to take the work experience programme lightly, but to seize the many benefits to be gained such as, improving their chances for full time employment, building their resume, as well as, boosting their confidence for professional growth and advancement.
She also used the opportunity to recognize one (1) male and one (1) female who were professionally attired, presented them with Corporate tokens, and wished them every success in their chosen careers.
In their own words, several participants praised the idea, and said the activity “helped them to know more about what is expected of them, with regards to dress, communicating with others, and being on time.”
According to Ms. Kerinda Warner, the Project Coordinator, “the idea behind this venture is to provide a forum for skills development, positive work ethics in a realistic environment, while creating avenues for trainees to acquire new knowledge and technological advances.”
Warner further added that “the timely and practical information will become very useful when they embark on a four (4) week stint with several businesses and individuals across many disciplines ranging from hospitality services, metal craft, construction, plumbing and administration, to name a few.”
The TDC Group expressed its profound thanks to AVEC for the opportunity to work with the students and commended Mr. Clyde Christopher, the learning institution’s Director for sanctioning the event.
