A spokesperson for the union, Ms. Yvette Herbert, explained that the workshop is really the latest effort toward the attainment of universal development of its executive members, school stewards and ultimately the general body of the union.
In an interview with Ms. Herbert, she told MiyVue.com that the union’s executive is aiming to arm its members and stewards, with the knowledge and applicable skills, to offer efficient representation to its general body.
The need for the workshop was identified to guide the union’s contribution to the further development of educational policies. It was also seen as an avenue to empower the teachers and provide a more conducive teaching-learning environment.

The training is being facilitated by a Certified Super Service Trainer and Professional Development specialist, Ms. Cyndie Demming.
The trainees were exposed to an abundance of information, good public speaking practices and interview skills and presented several opportunities for the thirty participants, to make presentations based on current issues, such as The Sugar Industry Diversification Fund, Sustainable Energy, Youth Development, and Educational Advancement.
The workshop commenced on Saturday 2nd June with a one day public speaking session labelled ‘The Passion to Speak’ and is the first of its kind to be conducted by the SKTU.
It was also mentioned that future training sessions will include Professional Protocol, Collective Bargaining and Human Rights and Trade Unionism.
