Djokovic, who began the year by winning the Australian Open, came from behind in both sets to end Swiss Federer’s hopes of a seventh title at the year-ending tournament.
In a tight game that bellied the straight-sets margin of victory Djokovic won a total of 96 points in the match – just one more than the former world number one.
Federer started in blistering fashion but the 25-year-old Serb hit back from 3-0 down in the first set before take a thrilling tie break.
The match seemed certain to be heading to a deciding set with Federer leading 5-4 and with two set points for the second set.
However, Djokovic won four points in a row to break back and, after holding his own serve, he broke Federer again to claim victory after two hours 14 minutes of absorbing action.

CORK’S Pairc Ui Chaoimh is the venue for the AIB Munster Club SHC final between two-time winners De La Salle (Waterford) and Thurles Sarsfields.
Dr Crokes of Kerry have home advantage for next Sunday’s SFC semi-final against Clonmel Commercials, and Castlehaven have benefited from a home draw for the second game in a row and will host Waterford champions Stradbally in Clonakilty.
Meanwhile, Waterford senior footballer Shane Briggs emerged last night as the man likely to take over as the county’s new senior football manager.
