The hard work has paid off for Armstrong the new Carnival Queen

This was a role she spent years dreaming about and more importantly planning for and on the night of 27th December, 2013, the LIME sponsored contestant finally realized her dream.

Of course, in addition to the above stated menu for success, the other critical element is having a great management team. A team that has creative and bold ideas and the ability to get things done in accordance with the criteria, so that your delegate can maximize her points in each segment.

Generally it was a contest that was closely fought, albeit really between three of the five contestants; the same trio that eventually took the top honours.

Armstrong was exceptional in her talent and gave new life to her career as one of the lead vocalists of the Royalties Band. But that alone did not deliver victory. She was fortunate in the interview segment to have received a question for which she had probably rehearsed the answer time and time again in her preparations, based on the Platform (topic) she was required to submit, like all the other delegates. But she demonstrated that she knew her script, that she knew her topic and had the ability to apply the information to smooth her way through the answer.

In the end she managed to amass 487 points to build a lead of 23.5 to move past her closest competitor, Carib Brewery sponsored, Yarini Morton, who too produced outstanding and consistent performances to amass some 463.5 points. Taking the Second Runner-up position was the delegate sponsored by the Development Bank, Brianda Harvey, on 437.5 points, 26 behind Morton and 49.5 points trailing the queen.

Sadly, the other two contestants, Miss National Bank, Lasanna Yearwood who was an early favourite of the public, and Miss ZIZ Broadcasting Corporation, Shakeda Gerald, were no match for the top three delegates and performed poorly in their interview segment where they would have received very low scores. It was as if they had little or no training for that all important appearance of the contest and their shortcomings showed clearly to the audience who reacted with the traditional Kittitian impatience and vocal displays of disappointment.

Except for Morton and Armstrong, and to a little extent Harvey, the interview segment was the biggest let down of an evening and a competition that generally was of a high standard with exceptional performances in most of the other appearances.

The guest appearances also added some value to the event and the duet of hostesses, despite a few errors for which they were punished by the crowd, they did a credible job keeping the show on a high and entertaining plateau.

In addition to being crowned queen, Armstrong won the segments for Best Talent, Best Interview, National Pride and Evening Wear.

The Swimwear segment was copped by Brianda Harvey.

The consolation prizes for Miss Photogenic and the Chairperson’s Award were all captured by Yarini Morton, while Miss Amity was awarded to Lasanna Yearwood.

The upcoming major carnival events include the Senior Calypso Monarch Competition on Saturday night (28th December), Miss Haynes Smith Caribbean Talented Teen Pageant on Monday 30th December, and Children’s or Junior Carnival Parade on Tuesday 31st December.
