Agriculture Minister, Dr. Timothy Harris continued to encourage the farmers and fishers to focus on satisfying a larger share of the food security needs as he continues to work to ensure a larger share of resources is being made available to them from both the private and public sectors.
“We are very satisfied that each event planned was executed successfully and the response by the farmers, fishers and public was positive” said Harris.
The week began Saturday, October 06, 2012, with a tour of the public market and a statement by Dr Timothy Harris, Minister of Agriculture, declaring the week open. Sunday witnessed a large turnout of farmers and fishers to a church service at the Estridge Moravian Church. Reverend Jeremy Francis delivered a lively sermon on the theme “Contract with the Land”. Other highlights included talks in schools, handing over of tools to the Sandy Point Primary School, talk on radio stations, tree planting at the Charles E. Mills Secondary School, and a Prize Giving Ceremony for farmers and fishers during which the outstanding performers in each subsector were recognized and presented with cash prizes by Dr Harris.
The eight day Week of Activities climaxed on Saturday, 13th October with an Agricultural Food Fair and Exhibition put on by the Sandy Point Agricultural Society (SPACS).
Dr. Harris congratulated Mr. Ian Chapman, Coordinator of the Week of Activities for his foresight, commitment and splendid organization of the events.
“I must thank the other members of his Committee, the Director of Agriculture, Mr. Thomas Jackson, the farmers and fishers and the public at large for the success achieved,” he concluded.
