The 2008 NCAA Indoor/Outdoor Champion is now joint fourth on the 2010 performance list with American Mike Rodgers. He is also joint ninth on the all-time standing with Rodgers and fellow Americans Leroy Burrell and Justin Gatlin along with Olusuji Fasuba of Nigeria. Thompson said he was surprised with the time.
He said, “I know I felt good before the race and I was ready to dip under 10 seconds, however 9.85 was beyond what I expected. I am just thankful for it.” Thompson credited Ato Bolton for his success.
He said, “I want to thank Ato. He still gives me advice and he has paved the way for us to do what we are doing today so kudos to him.
Thompson had asked for permission to miss the trials but his request was denied.
But he said the issue is now behind him and it “was a blessing in disguise” as he achieved a national record.
Thompson said the early part of his race has improved since the 2008 Beijing Olympics
