Basseterre, St. Kitts, 24th September, 2018 (MyVueNews.com) – The President of the St. Kitts Cricket Association (SKCA), Dennis Phillip, is delighted with St. Kitts winning the Men’s Leeward Islands 50-Overs Tournament played in Montserrat.
The St. Kitts Cricket Team entered the 2018 competition as champions and played very well to win the tournament three times in succession.
Speaking with MyVueNews.com, SKCA President Phillip said, “I want to congratulate our team for ‘three-peating’, as the Leeward Islands 50 Overs Champions. Our position going into the tournament was positive, because based on our preparation, we felt that we were well prepared for the tournament, and going as back-to-back champions, we knew that defending was not going to be easy, but we were quite prepared.”
With a core of about 30 players, Phillip said selecting the team for the tournament offered many options.
“Our team has been undergoing lots of training… Selecting a team was really an easy task for us this tournament. Even though a couple of the players would have been there before, getting this team together was not an issue at all. There were many other players who could have made the team.”
According to the SKCA president, the continuing practice and preparation puts the team in a good position.
Phillip said, “We are feeling strong. We are feeling confident that we will continue to move forward as a unit.”
St. Kitts played its last match against Antigua on Sunday, 23rd September, at Little Bay, Montserrat. In that match Antigua batted first scoring 218 runs off their 50 overs.
St. Kitts responded with some good batting, although there were some collapses at times. However, a confident 98 runs by Akeem Saunders brought St. Kitts home, beating Antigua by 4 wickets. St. Kitts reached 219 for 6 off 49 overs.
The six-country/team competition is due to be completed on Tuesday, but St. Kitts has already played all of its matches.
