Grand Parade Day is 1st January 2011 and it will boast an array of colourful costumes being paraded by both adults and children through the streets of Basseterre.
Head of the Traffic Department, Inspector Cromwell Henry, in an interview with MiyVue.com reiterated that the route is as follows:
- Troupes will assemble on Wigley Ave.
- Turn right on to Cayon Street
- Turn right into West Square Street
- Travel westward along the Bay Road
- Up College Street
- Right into Liverpool Row
- Left on to Fort Street
- and east in to Cayon Street
- Repeat route and climax on Bay Road outside Rams Supermarket.
Henry explained that amidst all the revelry, safety must be maintained and in effort to ensure that safety is preserved during this particular event, “Vehicles parking along the route would not be tolerated. Vehicles parking along the street would create obstruction for the bands and troupes. It narrows the space that the bands have to use and increases the risk of accident or even injury to spectators or parade participants.
“So, we are admonishing all motorists, to stay clear of the route. After the climax on the Bay Road, the road would remain closed to prevent motorists from driving through the crowds that most likely would remain on the road sometime after the troupes would have dispersed. We would not want to have the conflict between pedestrians and vehicles.”
Henry informed that to avoid any conflict, the area of the Bay Road which stretches between Adlam Street and College Street would remain closed until the area is clear of crowds.
The Grand Parade is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. and will climax at 6:00 p.m.
