Basseterre, St. Kitts, 16th April, 2018 (MyVueNews.com) – The 2018 Tradewinds exercises conducted in St. Kitts and Nevis will prepare security forces for phase two that will take place in The Bahamas, said Lieutenant Colonel (Lt. Col.) Thomas Grace, United States Marine Corps and Exercise Branch Chief at US Southern Command stationed in Miami.

Commenting on the phased approach to Tradewinds, Lt. Col. Grace said, “Phase one (in St. Kitts-Nevis) is the evaluation piece. Tradewinds has evolved from a point where we’ve integrated a phase zero. So that phase zero training is really incumbent upon the independent nations to work with their troupes and build that basic level of proficiency.”

He continued, “We come into phase one with everyone on some level where we can make the minor corrections, fix these small deficiencies and then give it a quick test run, or practice if you will, before actually moving into the execution in phase two.”

Phase one takes place 4th to 12th June in St. Kitts and Nevis, while Phase two occurs in The Bahamas, 13th to 21st June.

Lt. Col Grace said he was satisfied with the measures taken by the local organising committee to ensure the event is successful.

Exercise Tradewinds is a United States Chairman of Joint Chief of Staffs approved U.S. Southern Command sponsored exercise that is usually broken down into two phases.

This year, 22 countries and over 18 organizations will be participating in Tradewinds.

The countries include: Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas (Host Nation), Barbados, Belize, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominica, Dominican Republic, France, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico, Netherlands, St. Kitts and Nevis (Host Nation), Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, United Kingdom and United States.
