Verchilds High uses concert to demonstrate how injustices of the past still present today

Their effort also was to demonstrate how some of the same wrongs are still being committed in modern times. The concert came as part of the school’s History Heritage Day, organized by the History Department.

A source at the school said the concert helped to transport the students through time. The journey to the past, they added, started off with a song entitled Stand Up, Defend Your Rights, a song which students said spoke volumes about the injustices of black persons and what still occurs today.

Other performances included poetry pieces, skits, re-enactments of slave auctions and cane cutting.

Head of the History Department Marcella Burckley noted that the concert was a perfect opportunity for students to learn about their heritage, apart from the traditional learning from a history book.

A cultural wear contest for teachers and students was also held during the day.

The Ministry of Education said it fully endorsed the initiative which brought country’s history to life.
