‘War on Drugs’ failing, Golding tells UN revised approach needed

He was addressing the UN High-level Thematic Debate on the World Drug Problem on Thursday, May 7.

The Jamaican minister joined several others from Latin America in calling for a re-evaluation of the global drug policy paradigm, with a view to implementing a more holistic approach to addressing the world drug problem.

World leaders from all regions conveyed views about the need to adopt a more multi-dimensional approach to addressing drug control, including greater consideration of criminal justice reform, public health approaches, human rights, economic development, and social interventions.

CARICOM, for its part, emphasised the negative effects its members faced by virtue of being in a transit region, including the security implications and the role of transnational organised crime in contributing to socio-economic instability.
