We’ll announce candidates when we are ready – NRP Leader

Parry pointed out to MyVueNews.com that the Party has not chosen any candidate. He said, “A lot of the stuff you are hearing is not based on any statement that we have made. We have not made any statement to anybody, so whatever you are hearing or seeing in the media really has nothing to do with us officially.”

Parry said the recent party convention was not to announce candidates, but to choose the party’s leadership and to rally the membership. He did confirm, however, that the party is preparing itself to be an effective political party for the next elections.

Parry stated, “Of course we are working on our slate of candidates, but we have not made any announcement. Right now, what we are basically doing is strengthening our Party, our constituency branches, rallying our forces and reaching out to the public. We have not announced our candidates, yet. We will do that when we are ready.”

Meanwhile, Parry said the Party’s focus over the next few months will be about ensuring the political independence of Nevis within the federal system. He stated, “Having brought back government to Nevis in 1983, we should be building on the base that is there, making sure that we are able to raise our own financing, that we have a development program, and that we pursue such a program in the interest of the development of Nevis… We don’t want to become preoccupied with the politics of St. Kitts.”

In addition, he said NRP will continue to emphasize that ministers of the Nevis Island Administration should not be serving in the federal government. This idea was recently included in a change to the Party’s Constitution, prohibiting ministers from holding NIA office and federal office at the same time.

Parry said, “From our own experience, and from present observations, it just does not work.”

In addition to that, Parry indicated that there are several areas of concern that require attention, using the state of crime as a major issue.

He said, “Crime, for instance. We feel that we really need to bring crime under control seriously…  We need to know why it is happening. We need to bring an end to it.”

While the former premier believes that upgrades for police are important, it is to society that the government must look, he advised.

“We need to look at the basic values and foundations of our society. There are weaknesses, and those weaknesses have been there for a while. I don’t believe enough attention has been given to the weaknesses of our society,” said Parry.

Parry was referring to implementing policies and programs that will lead to generational change. He said they are not something you can do in a year or two.

But he said, “You have to reach out to young people. You have to reach out to parents and reach out to all the stakeholders in our society to make that serious change.”
