Graeme McDowell made the early move to get within four strokes but his challenge faltered on the back nine and in the end a one-over-par 73 from Westwood was more than good enough.

Robert Karlsson of Sweden ended as his closest pursuer, his round of 68 taking him two shots clear of McDowell (70) and American Jason Dufner (69) who tied for third.

While the event did not count towards the Race to Dubai, it did carry world ranking points and it lifted Westwood him into eighth place in the combined Ryder Cup standings.
