Yellow Man, while responding to a question from a reporter from the news website, MiyVue.com, said that those who are gay know who their people are and they also know their boundaries and would therefore not pose a threat to any artiste who is straight and confident of their manhood.
Yellow Man said when gays see men like himself, Gypsian, Konshens, Cocoa Tea and others, “Dem know say we straight, so dem nar mess wid we, so as an artiste I don’t have to dis them, (gays).Yellow Man said he is confident that those who have such sexual tendencies, would not think about approaching straight men like him.
Yellow Man was reacting to a question that spoke about the banning of some Jamaican reggae artistes, including here in the Caribbean, because of their lyrical content that seem to attack people who are classified as gay.
“A lot of people do not understand freedom. They only know the word. Freedom does not mean you free to do the wrong thing or that you are free to say the wrong thing,” said Yellow Man.
“Freedom means that you live and let other people live and you don’t ‘business’ with other people business,” said the former king of the dancehall music.
He said “If you are gay, I don’t hate you, because you are a human and everybody has feelings. I am not gonna talk any bad thing about anybody, including gays; because gays know who they want and they know them people.”
“But what a lot of artistes don’t know, is that a lot of gays own the whole entertainment industry and they also own the businesses that sell the beer, clothes and other key entertainment businesses. Some of them are good business people, so you should restrict your dealings with them, to business,” said Yellow Man.
Yellow Man at the time was part of a press conference, along with Konshens, Black Rhyno, Gypsian and other artistes who were scheduled to appear on the Friday night concert of the St. Kitts Music Festival.
Yellow Man was the first dancehall artiste who was signed by a major American label. His first album was released in 1983, gaining instant success. He also secured a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most albums released in a year.
