Identified by the police as “Akeem Marrishaw”, the 18-year-old was involved in an incident which transpired at about 12:15 p.m. on 6th December 2010 at the corner of West Independence Square and Cayon Streets.
Initial reports which reached MiyVue.com indicated that the young man was in pursuit of another with what has been described as a meat cleaver in hand when he was shot by a police officer.
A communiqué issued by the police force’s Press and Public Relations Office, explains that, “Police from the Basseterre Police Station responded to a report of shooting at the Corner of West Independence Square Street and Cayon Street. Police inquiries revealed so far that a member of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force was responding to an altercation between members of two rival gangs where missiles were being thrown and other types of offensive weapons were being used. The police challenged a young adult male who was at the time armed with an offensive weapon and the young male advanced towards the police with the offensive weapon.”
The release further explains that as a result of Marrishaw’s advancement, “The police officer discharged a single round from his service pistol and wounded his attacker. The young male who attacked the police…was taken to the JNF Hospital by the members of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and underwent emergency medical treatment but soon after succumbed to his injuries.”
Investigations are said to be on-going.
