Twenty-two-year-old Cleveland Berkley, a resident of the area, was taken to the JNF General Hospital where he died from his injuries. According to Police, the victim was shot while sitting under a tree. Investigators from the Violent Crimes Unit and the Criminal Investigations Department and technicians from the Forensics Services Unit have canvassed the scene for evidence.
Some sources have indicated that the young man might not have been the intended target as others were with him. The Police are continuing their investigations.
But just hours after that incident, the federation recorded another murder, this time on Nevis. MyVueNews.com understands that a local businessman known as Gary Claxton of Stoney Grove was shot and killed in what has been described as a robbery.
Police indicate that the shooting occured about 2.30pm on Monday (July 25) at Jessup’s Beach. Police said their initial investigations revealed that the victim was shot by an unknown assailant(s) during an attempted robbery. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
After somewhat of a lull in gun related crimes, the federation is experienceing an upsurge over the last few weeks. A double murder incident prompted then acting Minister of National Security Mark Brantly to issue a statement reaffirming Government’s commitment in tackling the violent crime issue, while calling on the law abiding citizens and residents to play their part to help reduce such crimes.
Police indicate that they are stepping up their intelligence gathering and other crime fighting initiatives in various parts of the country.
The murder count since the start of the year is at 21.
