This year 231 children signed up for the camp, with over 60 group leader volunteers and staff from the Department of Youth Empowerment overseeing the the program.
Senior Youth Officer Sahira David said that since the camp started on the 17th of July, the campers have been engaged in a number of daily events.
“We started on the 17th of July, and will be ending on the 31st. So far we’ve had our karaoke night, jingle competition, water day, and walk-a- thon.” said David, referring to some of the fun activities engaged in by the campers.
But the business expo is a significant component of the camp in the promotion of the concept of entrepreneurship among some of the participating campers.
“Right now we are preparing for our march through the streets of Basseterre per usual. But when we get to the Independence Square the campers will take charge of the Business Expo.” said Sahira, adding, “There will be 18 booths and the children will have products for sale.”
The march starts at 2pm from the campsite at the Beach Allen Primary School.
On Saturday, 30th July, 2016, the campers will be attending a banquet which formally ends the 2016 camp.
Senior Youth Officer David explains, “We will have a banquet for the campers where they will be dressed in formal attire. We will also be recapping what happened during the two weeks we had them.” On the 31st July, the campers will be leave for their respective homes.
According to David, sponsorship plays a very important part in hosting the annual camp and indicated that most of the sponsorship received is in kind, such as getting tents and chairs for the camp.
